Tips for creating a custom heating schedule
During the winter in Bellevue or a surrounding neighborhood, it’s a constant struggle between wanting to turn up the heat while also trying to save energy. Some homeowners choose to bundle up with hats and coats indoors to save energy. But surely there has to be another way…
And there is! With a smart thermostat system, you can create a personalized heating schedule that keeps your home cozy when you need it and saves energy when you don’t.
Today’s smart thermostats can even integrate with home control systems, allowing you to remotely adjust your heating system and schedules. Here’s how we recommend you use thermostat programming to stay comfortable and save energy in your Bellevue area home.

30 minutes – 1 hour before waking up
The time required to heat a room depends on the energy system and insulation of your home. For example, a well-insulated room with double or triple-glazed windows and well-sealed doors will heat up much more quickly than a drafty home.
In general, central heating systems with boilers and heat pumps can heat a room in between thirty minutes and one hour. So to start your day feeling warm and cozy, we recommend scheduling your smart thermostat to turn on an hour or thirty minutes before you wake up.
This way, it will be warm enough to get out of bed comfortably and you won’t have to hold on to the covers by hitting the snooze button. Your bedroom and other necessary rooms will be well heated so you can get dressed and ready for the day.
go out to work
If you leave home at the same time every day, you can set the thermostat to lower the temperature by a few degrees at the exact time you leave. This way you won’t accidentally leave the heating too high and avoid wasting energy and costs.
If you have pets at home, you can easily program certain rooms to stay warm and comfortable for them. However, be sure not to completely shut down the system while you are away. If you do, your heating system will use even more energy to reheat the entire house. Maintain a lower, more consistent temperature while you’re away rather than shutting down the system completely.
30 minutes – 1 hour before return
Avoid returning to a cold house by setting the heat to increase a few degrees before leaving work. It won’t use energy to fully heat your home all day long, but you’ll still be welcomed into a warm and cozy home.
Bedtime
Studies show that we sleep better in slightly cooler environments, between 60 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. While you don’t want to freeze, set the heat to turn down slightly while you sleep to save energy and make sure you don’t toss and turn and turn on the heat.
